Since 1997, Ms. Wilson has lived on land located in Warsaw, NC. There is a hog CAFO about one block away from her property. When a hurricane came in 1999 it caused the swine waste lagoon that is located upstream from her to flood. Since she lives downhill from the lagoon she was inundated with hog waste.
The hog producer continues to spray hog manure on the field right across from her house and yard, and the spray actually gets onto her house. She has to use a power sprayer to clean it off. Cars cannot be left in the driveway on days that the field is sprayed because the hog manure spray gets onto the cars. She does not know exactly how many feet away the sprayer might be, but it is about one-half to a full block. She can walk right across the road to the spray field.
Ms. Wilson says that she was there before the hog farms arrived in late 1997 or the early part of 1998. She can no longer sit outside and have a bar-b-que because the smell is too intense and the mosquitoes are really bad. She has sinus syndrome, a disease of the heart. She also has a pacemaker and asthma, all of which developed after the hog factory began operations.
